Church of San Sebastiano and Convent of Scolopi

One of the places to visit in Francavilla Fontana is the Church of San Sebastiano and the Convent of the Scolopi. Let yourself be enchanted by the fascinating ensemble of Salento Baroque elements and you will notice a series of peculiarities that will allow you to discover the architectural production of the 17th century. Work on the church began in 1696, thanks to the arrival in the town of the Padri delle Scuole Pie (or Scolopi), whose coat of arms can be seen above the external portal of the church. The dome, which can also be seen from the outside, was built later and is the first example in Apulia of domes built on the model of Roman domes. What makes it different, however, is that it is covered with majolica tiles which, if you look closely, reveal an explosion of colours. Inside, the altars are decorated with typical Baroque elements. Angels, flowers and animals are juxtaposed with ornamental motifs that resemble small layers of lace.
The canvas of the Madonna and Child among the Saints, which hangs on the wall above the high altar of the church, adds to the wonderful collection of liturgical objects and works of art that it houses.
