Church of Santa Chiara

Via Chiariste, 2 , 72021 Francavilla Fontana (BR)

In the centre of Francavilla Fontana is a small and precious church, next to the town's cathedral. This neoclassical church was built after the demolition of a former convent dedicated to the Poor Clares (1840), the original bell tower of which can be seen just behind the church. On entering the church, you will be struck by the beautiful majolica floor, with a geometric pattern of colours in the centre of the church, in perfect harmony with the style of the building.
In the sacristy you can admire the famous papier-mâché simulacra of the Mysteries, votive symbols for the people of Villafranca, carried in procession on Good Friday, close to Easter. Inside the church, seat of the Archconfraternity of Death since 1926, in the first chapel on the right there is the bust of S. Pompilio Pirrotti and in the next one the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, Neapolitan production.
Looking further up, you can see the grids: through them the Poor Clares could attend services without being seen by the faithful.
