Masseria Santa Croce Inferiore
Surrounded by olive groves and cultivated land, the charming Masseria Santa Croce Inferiore dates back to the 16th century and is an ancient agricultural estate that once housed the local oil mills of Francavilla Fontana.
Enclosed by ancient dry-stone walls and characteristic prickly pears, the Masseria has a peculiar layout that is typical of fortified rural architecture. The protruding cylindrical guard boxes on the upper corners of the walls are interesting. The fascinating hypogean Basilian crypt frescoed that is located undergroung unfortunately cannot be visited.
Today there is little left of the original complex, which has been transformed into a farm and has acquired other buildings, increasing the area used for various crops and livestock.
Today the Masseria offers visitors the opportunity to relive the history of ancient rural life through itineraries and food and wine tastings of traditional local flavours.
