Porta del Carmine

Via Roma, 122 , 72021 Francavilla Fontana (BR)

Walking through the graceful alleys and main streets of Francavilla Fontana, one cannot help but pause at the sight of this extravagant example of a city gate. The gate was built in the 17th century at the behest of the Imperiali family, who wanted to give the town a new urban layout and turn it into a prestigious fiefdom. From an architectural point of view, it presents the peculiarity of the three fornixes, or openings, which in this case are arranged according to different levels of height, generally specific to triumphal arches.
If you take a closer look at the monument, you will certainly notice two rectangular sections above the two lower arches, characterised by elaborate relief decorations.
This gate is a witness of historical events of great importance: in addition to the execution of the city's enemies and traitors, some of whom were hanged under the three large arches, it was also the scene of the entry into the city of the Prince of Francavilla and his bride, Princess Eleonora Borghese, who were greeted with enthusiasm and pomp by the people of Francavilla.
