Church Matrice of Santa Maria Assunta

Church Matrice of Santa Maria Assunta, in the historical centre of San Donaci, is the beating heart of its spiritual soul, a place where you can reconnect with your inner space while contemplating its luminous architecture that raises its gaze to the sky.
The church is built on an older nucleus, a smaller building with a cemetery function and a different layout from the current one, which was already consecrated to Our Lady of Sorrows, as evidenced by the precious Lecce stone altar still visible to visitors. Its current appearance, dating back to 1899, is the result of a major project of extension and adaptation due to logistical needs and strongly requested by the citizens, who actively contributed to its construction.
The building is a natural blend of late neoclassical and Apulian Baroque styles: From the linear and well-proportioned façade, where Renaissance structural elements are accentuated by Rococo-inspired Mannerist references, to the airy interior, divided into three naves with Romanesque vaults, supported by the curvature of the arches that lead the eye to the dome, frescoed in its pendentives, in a mosaic of stucco, marble and golden touches, in a perfect language, albeit sober, in dialogue with the neoclassical, of Baroque art.
During your visit, you will be able to admire frescoes and sacred works that tell the religious history of the city, immersing yourself in the spirit of San Donaci, which is still strong and unchanged.
