Former Dominican Convent

One of the main attractions in the town of Latiano is the Palazzo di Cristallo. Originally owned by the Dominican Fathers, this historic building dates back to 1586. The renovations that it has undergone over the years have altered its original and ancient appearance, which can be reconstructed through the small architectural and decorative details that can still be seen. The façade, which is composed in different ways, has an original vaulted entrance, which can be recognised by the precious and ancient sculptural rosettes that decorate the entrance area. The windows of the two entrances also have very refined decorative elements: the one above the original doorway has a charming balcony, though not prominent, with stylised 17th century columns resting on two tapered spiral lines.
Historically, the building has had many different functions, serving as a town hall and later as a school. During the Fascist regime, the courtyard of the building was used for gymnastic activities and to house some associations linked to the regime. Later, some of the rooms were used as a theatre and a cinema, which operated until 1960.
