Pappamusci

In Francavilla Fontana, you cannot miss the fascinating ritual that takes place during the days of Holy Week. You will be transported into an atmosphere of strong emotional impact, where you can observe traditions of extraordinary charm and devotional significance. On Holy Thursday, following the Holy Mass known as 'Coena Domini', the brethren of the Church of the Carmine, the 'Pappamusci', go barefoot for the sacred and ancient pilgrimage with cassock, hood and supported by a wooden stick, praying on their knees before the Repository of the 'Sepulchre'. This procession revives an ancient rite handed down by the Carmelite friars, who accompanied pilgrims to visit the sites of Christ's Passion. You will notice that during the night of Holy Thursday, a group of friars, accompanied by the 'trenula' (an ancient instrument with a peculiar sound) and two musicians, intone a 'nenia' at the door of the elderly citizens as a form of invitation to the Good Friday procession.
