Your stay in Mesagne must include a visit to the beautiful church dedicated to Saint Anne, a fantastic architectural example of the Baroque style of which the town is an authentic expression. Its foundation is attributed to Princess Vittoria Capano, widow of Nicola de Angelis, feudal lord of Mesagne, as a gift to Saint Anne for miraculously curing her son of a serious illness.
The construction of the building involved a partial disruption of the urban fabric, such as the destruction of a short section of the city walls. The fate of the church, which was completed in 1699 thanks to the efforts of her son, was unknown to the noble patron, who went to Naples and died there. At first sight, you will be completely captivated by the beautiful decorations of the Baroque façade. A closer look reveals the magnificent floral and architectural decorations that adorn the upper part of the façade, such as the exquisitely carved garlands and the elaborate cornices that frame the four niches. Passing through the entrance portal, also finely worked, you enter the single nave, at the end of which you will be enchanted by the luminous aura that surrounds the high altar. It is concave and covered with imitation marble stuccoes in the traditional Lecce Baroque style. The architectural marvels of the church are enhanced by the 18th century paintings depicting the Crucifixion with St. Francis and St. Catherine of Siena, the Holy Crucifix and the Deposition.
