Church of San Pietro

The Church of San Pietro is dedicated to the Apostle Peter because, according to legend, the saint spent a winter night in the village. Traces of the previous construction, a simple square building with a ribbed vault, can be seen in the old room that is now used as a sacristy. Attached to the church of San Pietro was a place known for centuries as the Oratory of the Pilgrims. Outside, near the doorway, there was a fountain with spring water that had a fine, fresh sweetness.  The small medieval church was incorporated into the present 17th century church that we admire today.  On the walls of the single nave there are some beautiful paintings and Baroque stuccoes of great historical and artistic interest, depicting episodes from the life of St Peter the Apostle. It is said that a relic of the bones of St Peter is jealously guarded in the church of Maria Assunta.
